Why Pili Kai

A more personal way to learn the water.

Every child experiences the water differently. Pili Kai provides personalized instruction built around your child’s comfort, confidence, ability, and individual pace — helping them develop the skills they need without getting lost in a large group setting.

01

Personalized Instruction

Lessons are tailored to the individual swimmer rather than forcing every child through the same lesson at the same pace.

02

Confidence Before Pressure

We focus on building comfort, trust, and positive experiences in the water while progressively developing essential swimming and water-safety skills.

03

Lessons Closer to Home

As a mobile swim school, Pili Kai brings personalized instruction to appropriate pools and select water locations around Oʻahu.

04

Progress With Purpose

From breath control and floating to propulsion and independent swimming, each lesson builds toward stronger skills and greater confidence in the water.

A different kind of lesson

Individual attention changes how a child learns to swim.

Private instruction gives your child more time to practice, receive feedback, and build skills at a pace that fits them. The instructor can adjust each lesson around your child’s comfort, ability, and progress rather than following a one-size-fits-all class plan.

Working consistently with an instructor also creates familiarity and trust. As your child grows in confidence and skill, the lesson evolves with them.

Our approach

A progression built on confidence, not pressure.

Every child moves through these stages at their own pace. Some spend weeks building comfort; others move quickly. The progression is a map, not a timeline.

  1. 01

    Comfort & Connection

Trust with the instructor and a calm, positive association with the water.

  2. 02

    Breath Control

Learning to manage breath and face-in-water comfort with steady repetition.

  3. 03

    Body Position & Floating

Balance, relaxation, and back floating as a foundational safety skill.

  4. 04

    Propulsion

Kicking, arm movement, and directed movement toward a wall or an adult.

  5. 05

    Independent Swimming

Combining skills to swim independently, recover, orient in the water, and move toward a wall or trusted adult with growing confidence.

  6. 06

    Continued Development

Refining technique, endurance, independence, and confidence across increasingly challenging swimming skills.

Family stories

In our families’ words.

Uncle Ua has given me a sense of peace with my children in the water now. He connected with my keiki quickly and taught them to swim in as little as four lessons. He is now working on technique and endurance. We have been to other schools in the area and didn’t see any progress, but Uncle Ua has given them the confidence and skills they need in the ocean.

Uncle Ua did wonders with my four girls! Confidence, strength, skills, and more. I would recommend Pili Kai Swim School to any child or adult. Until next summer!

I highly recommend Pili Kai Swim School! Uncle Ua was an amazing swim instructor for my 6-year-old. We discussed the goals we wanted to reach before starting lessons, and after the sessions were complete, my son had reached all of his goals and more than I expected. His demeanor was kind and provided such a safe and warm learning atmosphere. The sessions are packed with instruction the whole time.

About Pili Kai

Built on connection — to the water, and to each family.

Pili Kai was built around a simple idea: children learn best in the water when they feel known, supported, and confident enough to try.

“Pili” speaks to closeness, connection, and relationship. “Kai” is the sea. Together, the name reflects the connection we hope each swimmer develops — with their instructor, with their own abilities, and with the water around them.

For families living on an island, the water is part of everyday life. Pili Kai provides patient, personalized instruction designed to help children develop confidence, skills, and a positive relationship with the water.
